Schizophrenia Resources
As I learn about new treatments for schizophrenia, or I’m asked a specific question, I do a little research and learn even more as there are always new studies, therapies, and medications. See this site for scientific abstracts and open access reports on the latest research. https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/schizophrenia-research .
If you are looking for support and a more general resource, please check out the National Schizophrenia Foundation (NSF). https://www.nsfoundation.org/
The Schizophrenia and Psychosis Action Alliance’s mission is to “advance systemic change and promote recovery through Research, Education & Care and Advocacy & Public Policy” and is another great resource with a focus on pushing for action and a cure. https://sczaction.org/.
An important book by Jeffrey Lieberman, Malady of the Mind - Schizophrenia and the Path to Prevention is a powerful biography of the illness, current treatments and how the future might bring forth paths to prevention.
This was a bit mind blowing for me. Dr. Xavier Amador’s TEDx Talk, “I’m Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help!” This is also a book. My main take-away is that anasognosia is a symptom of schizophrenia wherein the person does not believe they are sick. Makes this a tough illness to treat. His talk provide ideas on how to communicate with our loved ones with schizophrenia. https://www.leapinstitute.org
This is a video explaining schizophrenia by breaking it down. The white board approach here works well. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RROn-pMXPgE&noapp=1
This one is a podcast called Schizophrenia: Three Moms in the Trenches Podcast. Each of the women hosts has a son with schizophrenia and has written a book about it. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/schizophrenia-three-moms-in-the-trenches/id1553468781
And of course the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) www.nami.org
